Red Buckeye Tree (Aesculus pavia) A
small tree for the home landscape. Would do well as a focal tree in the shrub
border or as a patio tree. American Indians threw powdered seeds and crushed branches of
this tree into pools of water to stupefy fish. The fish rose to the surface and were
easily caught. |

Foliage is dark green, palmate with 5
leaflets. |

Yellow-Red flowers are grouped in upright
panicles, each panicle is about 6" in length with each flower approximately 1
1/2" long. They contrast nicely with the dark green foliage. |

Fruit is contained in a smooth tan capsule,
approximately 2" in diameter and containing 1 to 3 shiny, dark brown seeds. |

Bark: Pioneers made home remedies from the
bark and used the gummy roots as a soap substitute. |
