Foliage is dark green, stiff needles that are 2 ½ to 4 inches long and stay on the tree for 5 to 6 years. | |

Flowers are monoecious (both male and female on the same tree). The male flower cones are small and yellow-green, the female are bright reddish-purple, turning to green and then brown after fertilization. | |

Cones are brown, moderate-sized and woody. They are 3 to 6 inches in length with a short stalk Seeds are large and usually wingless. | |

Bark is initially thin, smooth and gray-white in color. It later darkens to brown or black with deep fissures and square plates. |
