Foliage consists of bright, shiny green leaves that are opposite and simple. They are 2 to 3 inches long and have 3 lobes, the middle lobe being longer than the lateral lobes. Fall color is an outstanding bright red. | |

Flowers are yellow-green and fragrant, occuring in long-stemmed clusters in spring. | |

Seeds are samaras, 3/4 to 1" long, that ripen in early fall and persist into winter. | |

Bark is grayish brown, developing darker striations and furrows ('snakebark') with age. |
