Sunday newspaper advertisements often feature a "too-good-to-be-true" lawn grass called Zoysiagrass. It will not perform as well in Colorado as the ads suggest. Here it will be slow to establish and likely to suffer extensive winter damage from which it is slow to recover. Ongoing research at Colorado State University's Department of Horticulture, however, suggests that varieties of Zoysiagrass, other than the one featured in ads, may have local possibilities. Full evaluation of these other Zoysiagrass varieties will take several more years to complete. For now, Coloradans are advised not to buy the advertised Zoysiagrass. Better local choices for alternative lawn grasses include Buffalograss, Blue Grama turf-type tall fescue and, for higher altitudes, fine fescue.
