Silver spikegrass (Spodiopogon sibericus) is
a warm season, clump forming grass that is slower growing than most other grasses. It's
foliage is coarse and bamboo-like. Shade tolerant, it makes a perfect companion for hostas
and ferns. Very showy and is one of the most beautiful grasses when massed, especially in
late summer when the wine-tinged blossoms are at their peak. Silver spikegrass prefers
moist, fertile soil and can be grown in full sun to part shade. In hot climates, it should
be grown in shade. |

Blue fescue (Festuca glauca) is
a cool season, clump forming grass with fine blue/gree foliage that grows 4-8 inches in
height. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and full sun to light shade. This grass is
drought tolerant when grown in shaded areas. Its small size makes it a good addition to
planters, window boxes, rock gardens and borders. The color compliments purple-leafed
plants.
Can be trimmed back in late summer. |

Switch grass, (panicum virgatum 'rehbraun') is
a fountain-like grass that can be grown in a variety of soils, but prefers sandy or loamy
soils. It is drought tolerant once established but can tolerate short periods of being
wet. Works well in borders, massed in rock gardens or as a lone specimen plant. Switch
grass is a clumping grass that is generally non-invasive, but can spread by rizomes given
the right growing conditions. It should be cut back early in spring to encourage new
growth. the foliage is deep green, turning to various shades of yellow in fall. Feathery
panicles rise 1 to 2 feet above foliage and maintain an upright winter silhouette. |

Sand love grass (eragrostis
trichodes) is easily grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil,
though it prefers sandy, fertile soil. Does best in full sun and tolerates hot dry sites.
Flowers are an amethyst pink and appear in inflorescence that are loose and open.
Good as fresh cut or dried flower in arrangements. Bright green leaves turn bronze
in fall and this plant adds interest to the garden well into the winter. No serious pest
or disease problems affect love grass. It can be used in a border, grouped or as a
specimen plant. This grass should be cut back to the ground in early spring before new
growth appears. |
